NINR Director, Dr. Shannon Zenk, posted a Director’s Message about the development of NINR's Strategic Plan for 2022-2026. She also addresses the list of recommendations for potential NINR research areas that developed from the NACNR working group. 

Dr. Zenk also discusses the report from the National Academy of Medicine: The Future of Nursing 2020–2030: Charting a Path to Health Equity

"This report makes a compelling case for nurses assuming a leading role in overcoming and eliminating the persistent health inequities in our society, and I encourage you to review the report’s recommendations. It is clear from the report that nursing science is an important part of this effort, and as a leader in the field of nursing science, NINR is integral to funding research that will contribute to the evidence base needed to achieve The Future of Nursing’s goals relating to health equity."

In the last year, the public has focused on scientific research more than ever, and at the 2020 NightinGala, we heard stories directly from nurse scientists on the frontlines of COVID-19 research. FNINR wants to continue honoring nurse scientists fighting for better health outcomes by presenting stories of NINR-funded research during the 2021 NightinGala.

The NIH Helping to End Addiction Long-term Initiative has opened an idea exchange to hear from the public. The goal is to crowdsource solutions to improve pain management and the prevention and treatment of opioid misuse and addiction. The comment period will close on June 1. NIH has launched an effort to end structural racism in biomedical research through a new initiative called UNITE. You can find NIH Director, Francis Collins' statement here. NIH asks that you share your perspective and recommendations as we thoughtfully consider NIH’s proactive approach to address racial and health inequities in biomedical research. Comments can be submitted through the submission website and must be received by April 9, 2021.

NIH has published two Research Opportunity Announcements for research concerning individuals who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and suffer from post-acute manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

• A COVID19 Recovery Cohort ROA soliciting proposals for studies involving (a) clinical recovery cohorts, (b) EHR and other real-world data, and (c) autopsy cohorts; proposals must be received by 5:00 p.m., March 23, 2021.
• A Clinical Science Core ROA soliciting proposals for (a) a Data Resource Core, (b) a Clinical Studies Core, and (c) a Biospecimen Core; proposals must be received by 5:00 p.m., March 16, 2021.

What advice would you give your younger self?
Identify what brings you the most joy and meaning in your work. It can be tempting to be drawn into projects or positions where others tell you you're needed or they say you have particular talents. But this can distract you from a career trajectory that may ultimately be your greatest source of contribution and satisfaction in life. It's important to make clear decisions about your priorities and stay in charge of your career.

Where is your favorite vacation spot? 
My favorite spot is anywhere in nature where I'm surrounded by wildlife, large powerful trees, vocal birds, and foliage of all kinds. The beauty and peacefulness of nature always help me 'vacate' and revive my soul!
