With its proximity to many of the country’s top medical institutions, Goldfarb is at the epicenter of a rich environment of research collaboration. In partnership with WashU Medicine, Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Siteman Cancer Center, WashU McKelvey School of Engineering, The Institute of Clinical and Translational Sciences, and The McDonnell Genome Institute, we work across disciplines and find multidisciplinary solutions to address the most pressing issues in the nursing field today.

Heidi Holtz, PhD, RN
Research focus: Nurses' well-being
Dr. Heidi Holtz is an assistant professor of Research at Barnes-Jewish College Goldfarb School of Nursing. Her research focuses on empowering nurses by building resilience and fostering safe practice environments to address the critical need for recognizing and alleviating everyday trauma and stress. Committed to reducing burnout and promoting supportive workspaces, Dr. Holtz aims to enhance both nurse well-being and patient care.

Sarah Farabi, PhD, RN
Research focus: Sleep and metabolic health
Dr. Sarah Farabi is an assistant professor with expertise in the measurement of sleep and metabolic function. She collaborates with Nurses for Newborns in St. Louis and the Parents as Teachers National Center to conduct community-based research. Dr. Farabi works to develop interventions to improve sleep health and decrease diabetes risk in pregnant and postpartum populations.

Masako Mayahara, PhD, RN, FAAN
Research focus: Pain interventions for hospice patients
Dr. Masako Mayahara is a professor and leading clinical expert in pain management within hospice and palliative care. She is the principal investigator on an NIH-funded trial that assesses the efficacy of a digital application, e-PainSupport, designed to reduce pain intensity in home hospice patients.

Tamara Otey, PhD, RN
Research focus: Hospital-acquired pneumonia
Dr. Otey studies non-ventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia (NV-HAP), a modifiable risk factor related to oral hygiene. She conducts research on educational interventions featuring nurse-driven oral care protocols ratified by the American Dental Association.

Po-Yin Yen, PhD, RN, FACMI
Research focus: Nursing documentation burden
Dr. Po-Yin Yen's research goals are to promote applied clinical informatics research and provide a user-friendly Health IT environment for clinicians. She is currently investigating approaches to reduce documentation burden and identify patient deterioration early.

JoAnn Jabbari, PhD, RN
Research focus: Loneliness and veterans’ health
Dr. Jabbari investigates systemic inflammation as a link between loneliness and suicidality among U.S. veterans. Her work aims to inform precision prevention strategies and improve socialization and mental health outcomes for those who served.
