Board Member Spotlight: Roy Simpson

Roy L. Simpson, RN, DNP, FNAP, FAAN, FACMI
Emory University Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing

What advice would you give your younger self?
Get your doctorate before SS benefits and Medicare kick-in, but you are never too late to get it.

Where is your favorite vacation spot?
Provincetown, MA.

What made you want to pursue a career in nursing?
I wish I could say I wanted to be a nurse from the time I was born but not- I got into nursing thinking I would go to nurse anesthesia school given no men admitted in GA to a SON after pharmacy school, but actually had a real alignment to data from the first project I did in a diploma school. Launched my career and I did not even know it.

What book should every nurse read?
Jo Ann Ashley's book "Hospitals, Paternalism and the Role of the Nurse" a book on clarity about how we got to where we are in the context of medicine, hospitals and the role of women in society. Helps you understand our professional roots. Better than anything Florence Nightingale wrote for an American Nurse- men and women need to read.

What has been your most interesting/surprising outcome while conducting nursing research?
You need a true mentor in data science for research grants- Dr. Herzberg and Dean McCauley set me on the path once I left corporate nursing and CNE life in leadership- now, Co-PI on 3.7M from NIH. Understanding the software, tools and language of researchers is key to success in grantsmanship writing.

What is a fun fact many people may not know about you?
I am a owner of famous Wire Fox Terriers Westminster and National show dog winners in conformation. I am known at Emory as Professor of the Pooch! https://emorywheel.com/nursing-assistant-dean-finds-passion-in-pooches/.
